Some of the top smartphone makers in India are already on the race to launch first 5G smartphones in 2020. Does an expensive 5G smartphone really worth your heavy investment now? Let’s figure it out.
Who wins the Race by Launching first 5G phones in India?
It goes without saying that both iQoo and Realme are the winners with their first 5G smartphones in Indian market. Another interesting thing is that China-based BBK Electronics is the father of both the companies.
Realme x50Pro and iQoo 3 are 5G-ready smartphones and their prices are ranging from Rs. 39,999 and Rs. 38,990 respectively (after recent GST hike on smartphones by government).
For Your InformationInitially started off as Oppo’s sub-brand, Realme now became a smartphone king in Indian market. Currently, iQoo is Vivo’s sub-brand. BBK Electronics owns both Vivo and Oppo. Vivo, Oppo and Realme are ranked among the top 5 smartphone makers in Indian market, according to Counterpoint Research.
Should You Really Buy a 5G Smartphone in India?
Precisely NO! 5G is still a far-flung dream in India. There is no sign to have 5G network in India this year yet. Prices of 5G spectrum are the way too high and, as you know, Indian network carriers like Airtel, Idea and Vodafone are already on the losses and ridden by debts. According to a recent report, only 5% population in India would be able to use 5G by 2023, and around 53% users will still be using 4G devices.
If you look at the current situation, government may start auctions for 5G spectrum by the end of 2020 or early 2021, according to Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad, Union telecom minister. Even if telecom operators manage to own 5G spectrum, it would take several months to conduct final tests. The chances are less that 5G networks will be here before 2021 end or so.
Why smartphone companies are so aggressive for 5G devices now?
If you look at their perspective, they are not wrong to launch 5G-ready smartphones because they have to advance before 5G technology actually arrives. As a consumer, it would be too early for you to pay a hefty price for a flagship 5G phone.
How will 5G make your life easier?
As the name suggests, 5G is the 5th generation technology for mobile networks. We have seen a huge improvement in the overall internet experience and speeds while upgrading from 2G to 3G and from 3G to 4G over the years. In a densely populated nation like India, it is really uncertain as when we are going to level up from 4G to 5G.
FYI, 5G is going to offer 100 times faster and reliable connection to our smart devices and IoT ecosystem, which includes CCTV cameras, smart electronics, driverless vehicles etc. 5G is going to speed up not only smartphones and laptops, but also devices which need data transmission. We can expect better and smoother experiences in future.
